Spend a little time or a lot of time just hanging out with your friends knitting or crocheting a square for the Warm Up America Foundation. Instructors from Pat Catans will be on hand to assist you. Pat Catans will provide yarn and needles for your use. The squares, knitted or crocheted, are assembled and distributed to families in need. Since 1992, Warm Up America has donated more than 250,000 quilts to homeless shelters, women’s shelters, churches, hospices, hospitals, nursing homes, Red Cross chapters, and more. Make a 7 x 9 inch square, learn a new stitch, spend some time socializing while you do some charity work. No registration necessary. All day Saturday and Sunday.

Teach Me 2 Knit and Crochet Classes Sponsored by Coats and Clark (FREE with admission) Registration necessary

Free class sponsored by Coats and Clark for those who have never knitted or crocheted before. Learn to cast on, a knit stitch or chain stitch and to cast off. Participants will be given a set of needles, a crochet hook, yarn, instructions and a simple pattern to take home. This class is open all day Saturday and Sunday, is for all ages, and is FREE with your admission. It requires no knitting or crochet experience. Various yarns, ribbons and an accent bead will be provided for you to explore your creativity. This is an open classroom format. There is no reservation or registration necessary. This is a great class to take with your friends as it requires little concentration. Simple color selection and an easy binding technique is all that is needed to create a “one of a kind” necklace for yourself or as a gift. This necklace is a creative and imaginative way to use your yarn stash and a great idea for a home party. You may bring your own yarn, if you prefer, for the necklace.

Stitch Pattern Sampler: All Levels, but may be best suited for beginners. 2 sessions in the morning, 2 in the afternoon (Saturday & Sunday) each sampler class is ONE HOUR , there are 8 total offered both days: $10.00 per sampler, 4 for $35.00 or all 8 for $70.00 w/ Jane Bigelow & Jill Bigelow-Suttell NEW”

This is a new class format: Each sampler class session is one hour long. There are eight offered, 4 each day. You may take only one class sampler, 2, 3, or all 8. Do you want to move beyond stockinette and garter stitch? Do you find those huge stitch pattern books a little intimidating? Then this class is for you! We will introduce you to 8 different patterns that will add texture to your knitting. We will slip stitches, twist stitches and even drop them on purpose. Turn each pattern into a block for an afghan, or add what you have learned to your other knitting projects. Registration necessary. Sampler sessions are:

Beginning Tri-Loom Weaving-Make a 2-Foot Triangle Scarf All Levels 9:00 am-1:00 pm $50.00 w/ Pam Kelly NEW”

Students will be making a 2 foot triangle scarf on a Triangular Loom. You will be learning to do a continuous weave on the Tri-Loom, how to attach the fringe and how to take the scarf off the loom. Latch hooks and yarn will be provided in the class material fee of $15. A Class handout will be provided in the class fee. Looms will be available for purchase at a 10% discount from the instructor. Felted sweaters, blanket wool, copper and bronze closures and focal points all rolled into one! Learn to recycle old sweaters into fashionable jewelry. Learn to make wool beads and various shapes of cut fabric to create your one of a kind piece. Join two artists teaching in tandem, Rose Ann Hunter, fiber artist and Leslie Wind, jeweler. Work in the group with Rose Ann in making your soft jewelry and then with Leslie to make the perfect closure. Walk away with at least one individual piece. You will want to start making these for not only yourself, but for gifts as well. Such simple techniques, no previous skills required, only your imagination! Registration necessary.

In this hands-on workshop, explore the basics of this classic knitting technique, from deciphering charts to practicing all sorts of cable crossings. Garter Stitched Patchwork Cardigan Sweater: Beginner & up 9:00-12:00 pm (morning session)

1:30- 4:30 pm (afternoon session) $60.00 w/ Nancy Premoshis

This is a whole day class, taught in two 3 hour sessions; one in the morning and one in the afternoon.

A Cardigan sweater inspired by a technique used by Valentina Devine. There is not a specific pattern for this sweater, but students will be able to make this sweater to fit. Full instructions will be given for the complete sweater. Students must be able to knit, cast on and off, pick up stitches. It is helpful if student is able to do a single crochet. Registration necessary, lass size limited to 12.

Supplies Needed: 1700 yards of worsted weight yarn of various colors; different textures can be used, but the yarn should be the same content (all or mostly cotton, all or mostly wool, etc.) Lighter weight yarn can be combined to equal worsted weight. It is not necessary to bring all 1700 yards to class, but each color to be used should be brought with you. Size 6, 7 or 8 knitting needles, depending on the gauge. If student is a loose knitter, 6 or 7 could be used, if tight knitter, 8 may be better. (Double points, with end protectors can be used or 10” straight needles because at no point will there be a lot of stitches on the needles.) Crochet hook: size G, tapestry needle, tape measure, notebook for note taking.

Dropped Stitch with a Purpose: All Levels 9:30 - 11:30 am $20.00 with Inge Deneen NEW”

In this workshop we will explore the effects of “dropping a stitch”. This is an easy technique to add stunning effects to scarves, shawls, and other garments. We will also meet its relative, the elongated stitch, and play with its effects, creating yarn floats and waves. We will knit samples for the dropped stitch and elongated stitch and talk about possibilities and pitfalls (and how to avoid them.) Lastly, we will cast-on and get you well on your way to your own design of a dropped stitch shawl or scarf. Your choice! Registration necessary.

Yarn for samples: sport, dk, or worsted weight, solid or multicolored/variegated yarn; 3 different yarns (left-over and partial skeins are fine)

Yarn for scarf: about 200y multicolored or variegated yarn in dk or worsted weight

When your ruffles have ruffles, interesting things happen! Come explore the wacky possibilities of knitting that’s totally hyperbolic. This is one of the simplest patterns you’ll ever follow, but the results will wow your friends with higher math. Knitted Carpet Bags: All Levels 1:30 - 4:00 pm $20.00 with Rose Ann Hunter

Make yourself a unique handbag. Learn to knit with fabric itself, and the various ways to construct it. Learn to use up your leftover fabrics and turn them into a useful and one of a kind bag. You will complete a swatch and the ability to go on to making your own individual handbag. Also taught in this class is the popular confetti bag. This is made with a worsted weight yarn, and strips of cotton, silk or wool fabric. You will learn how to knit right into the framework of your knitting various strips to create a plush and decorative handbag that can be decorated with buttons, and beads. For both bags, you will learn different ways to make a handle, one of which is a simple hand sewn center shirred fabric.  Once you have mastered these techniques you can go on to making a carpet for your home.  Come join the fun and start your own heirloom handbag. Wrapped Coil Basket: All Levels 1:30 - 4:30 pm $20.00 with Kate Silberberg

In this class, you will learn an age old technique; how to wrap yarn around a piece of cloth rope and stitch it together to form a coiled “Navajo” basket. The process involves “starting with the navel” of the basket, the starter spiral, and changing yarn to add colors, and finishing the basket. Students will either take home a small finished basket and the skills to make a larger one or will know the skills required to complete their larger basket. Registration necessary, class size limited to 15.

Materials Needed: You may bring your favorite yarns, worsted weight or heavier (from your stash) and a tapestry needle, although instructor will have extra needles available to use and a wide variety of yarns to use as well.

A discussion about the Swedish technique of twined knitting will be conducted along with many examples shown. Students will learn to read the charts for twined knitting patterns and be provided with a pattern for a sampler hat project. Students will receive one on one help with using this old technique in a new way. It will be helpful if student can knit by throwing with the right hand. Must be able to KNIT IN THE ROUND.

Interactive Noni Bag Clinic: All Levels (Saturday afternoon, following the luncheon) 2:00 - 5:00 with Nora Bellows in the Crawford Venago Ballroom $30.00 NEW”

The workshop will consist of lecture/demo interspersed with lots of hands-on practice for those involved. I have discovered that participants can be at any stage of bag-making: they might be beginners interested in making a first bag and thus purchase some materials for making bags, including patterns, hardware, stiffener, etc., they might be intermediate knitters with felted bag “bodies” they need to finish professionally, etc. I will cover how to structure a bag that requires crisp shaping and how to put structure in the bottom of a bag so it will keep its shape, as well as how to do the following: apply bag feet, magnetic snaps of various kinds, put in a zipper, apply handles using knitted tabs, fabric tabs, the use of resin handles, leather handles, wooden, etc., and how to design and apply embellishments, including how to bead for a dazzling, unique look. My overall objective is to empower the participants to finish their bags in a way that is professional and allows them to explore and display their own creativity. Noni patterns will be available for sale. You are invited to bring a bag you have started, needs, help or finished and wish to embellish. Items from the Trunk show will be on display.

The Art of Needle Felted Embellishment: All Levels 9:00 -12:00 pm $25.00 w/ Esther Bechler NEW”

This class covers 2 dimensional needle felting techniques (with lots of hands on practice), planning your design without breaking copyright laws, matching tools and fibers to your project, as well as working on the project you bring to class. Personalize your next project even more! Take a step into color with an introduction to dyeing. Learn about different dyes and how to mix them so that you can "paint" your yarn and roving. We will cover color theory, color schemes, and how to use color in your next project. We will be dyeing wool yarn for a pocket scarf project, then add even more color by dyeing washed wool locks to personalize your project. Learn how to use different tools and techniques, including a variety of ways to set your dyes and my own technique to “latch” the locks onto your project to add even more dimension. These will all be covered in class, with any other techniques which students may request. Students are invited to bring a half finished garment on which you need help or advice. We will learn and explore the world of scumbling and other freeform techniques, such as buillion stitches, hyperbolic crochet, and other organic shapes and will discuss how it's used with traditional crochet. Everyone's project will be unique and different, no patterns here! Take the ordinary and make it extraordinary! Take your skills to a whole 'nother level! Please though, bring some run of the mill acrylic yarns as well, just because they are easy to use. Hooks: Bring a few different sizes. Please make sure that H8 is one of them.

Lace and Loop Scarf: Advanced 9:00 - 12:00 $30.00 with Daniel Yuhas NEW”

This complex scarf breaks the barrier from fancy into fabulous. Gravity-defying loops of I-cord wrap the neck, while a spreading bell of simple lace dangles below. As fun to wear as it is to make! Students should be comfortable reading a pattern and have experience knitting lace and I-cord. Registration necessary.

Materials Needed: Worsted weight yarn, preferably something drapey (e.g. bamboo, modal, rayon, alpaca), 2 straight needles and 2 double-pointed needles of the size recommended on the yarn wrapper.. About 300 yards needed for the complete scarf.

Nuno Felted Silk Scarf: All Levels 1:30 - 3:30 pm $25.00 with Wini Labrecque

Learn the basics of this wet felting technique while creating a beautiful felted fiber embellished silk scarf.

Using dyed rovings, yarn snippets and threads we will create a design on a piece of silk gauze then apply soap, water and agitation to make the applied embellishments adhere to the silk. Finished scarf will still be wet when class is done so students should bring a gallon size zip lock type bag to put scarf into after class. Students should also bring 2 beach towels. We will be handling wool fibers. Anyone allergic to wool should not take this class. Students should be able to stand for 2 hours and be able to tolerate using hands, fingers and upper arm strength for rolling the felt. You will take home an original silk scarf designed and made by you. Registration necessary.

Materials Needed: Students should bring 2 beach towels with them and a gallon size zip lock plastic bag.

This class is similar to the morning class, except that it is offered for the advanced knitter. Susan will offer tricks, tips and techniques that she has been using for many years. Subjects that will be covered: finishing garments, seams, necks, kitchener stitch, invisible cast-on, design, using the natural tendency of various stitches. Casting or binding off in rib ---- a better way? Buttonholes-- the best kind!! Grafting, knitting backwards, lace, “rolardex,” plus ways to make graph reading easier. This will be a “fluid” class where students can make requests for a certain topic to be covered, and if all are in agreement, different techniques will be covered. Learn new, different, maybe even easier and better techniques to make your knitting easier and more beautiful. Registration necessary, class size limited to 10.

What is the best cast-on? As with many knitting techniques, the answer is “it depends.” Most of us use the same cast-on almost all the time. In this workshop we will expand your repertoire of cast-ons. We will review several popular cast-ons, discuss their pros and cons and become familiar with new ones.

Want to use a cast-on that stays flat in stockinette? Too tight cast-ons for socks? Matching cast-on and bind-off edges for shawls and side to side garments? Which new techniques will you add to your knitting arsenal? Prerequisite skills: Students should know how to knit, purl, and at least one type of cast -on.

Designing Heirloom Rugs All Levels 1:00- 4:00 pm $20.00 with Rose Ann Hunter NEW”

All knitted rugs are formed by assembling strips, blocks and wedges. Learn to construct various shapes with simple knitting, such as coiled, corded, washboard, heart shaped, and ovals. All techniques are adapted from rug patterns from the early 1800’s and brought to present day. While you are listening to a short lecture on heirloom rugs, start working on a hands on project that you will combine knitting with a hand sewn process using old wool fabric to make a small mat. You will go home and want to recycle your old clothes into heirloom rugs! Registration necessary.

Materials Needed: Scissors.

Homework: Knit with any yarn and color choice of a worsted weight yarn, a strip of just garter stitch of 4 stitches and 12 inches long. Then knit the same but knit 5 strips 6 inches long.

Materials Fee: $10.00 for a small kit that includes the right size short wooden needles, bits of yarn and wool fabric, payable to the instructor.

Making Yarn from Recycled Materials: Treasure from Trash All Levels Knit & Crochet 1:00-4:00 pm $20.00 with Karen Page NEW”

In this class, we will explore finding and preparing recycled materials. It is a 2 phase class format. This class will focus on finding and making recyclable materials into strips that are recognizable “yarns” for knitting or crocheting, Identifying useable recyclable materials.

Phase one: A discussion that will will focus on the preparation of the materials for the finished piece. It will show the preparation materials as a means of making “yarns” for knitting and crocheting.This includes:

Searching for and selecting appropriate materials, preparation of materials such as washing, folding and cutting of materials, assembling and winding into balls of yarn and adding embellishments: such as beads, buttons, other yarn, etc.

The discussion will address the sourcing of materials: what you have at home, where to find materials and how you can identify and process them. I will have samples to show – the different “yarns” that can be made as well as some pieces that have been completed. The end product of this class will be at least one ball of “yarn” ready to knit/crochet. Registration necessary.

Phase two:

Knitting with recycled materials:

The second phase of this class will focus on producing a product with your ball of recycled materials “yarn”. The participants will make a small piece with size #8 needles that will be either a cell-phone bag, an id card carrier or a coin purse. Must be able to cast on, knit, purl, cast off.

Crocheting with recycled materials:

The second phase of this class will focus on producing a product with your ball of recycled materials “yarn The participants will make a small piece with size #g or h crochet hook. Suggested projects include a cell-phone pocket, an id card carrier or a coin purse. Must be able to single crochet & double crochet.

Students should bring: Several old cotton t-shirts, (I prefer 100% cotton rather than blends but that’s a personal choice), a clear ruler, scissors, a sharp rotary cutter and cutting board if you own one or very sharp scissors and a clear ruler will do. You may also bring plastic shopping bags and pieces of clothing, buttons, various yarns from your stash. Knitters: size 8 needles. Crocheters: # G or H crochet hook.

Homework: Scouting through the house to find some materials that are suitable to bring with you as noted in the description above.

Fabulous Versatile Pinwheels: Intermediate/Advanced 1:30 - 4:30 pm $30.00 with Daniel Yuhas NEW”

Around and around we go! In this class we will learn the easy and fun pinwheel technique to make a fabulous and quick blanket, a simple baby hat or a smart grown-up cap, all from the same basic pattern. Students may finish a baby cap during class time, or be well on their way towards a blanket or adult hat. Simple, easy-to-follow pattern adapts on the fly to any yarn weight and any size head. Students should be comfortable using double-pointed needles. Yarn-overs will be covered in class, and there’s barely any purling. Students must know knitting in the round, yarn-overs, ribbing. Registration necessary.

Supplies Needed: Worsted or bulky weight yarn (100 yards for a baby cap, 200 yards for an adult hat, or 400 yards for a blanket) and a set of 5 double-pointed needles, preferably wood or bamboo. A 24 or 36 inch circular needle if completing the blanket. Stitch markers.
